MONSEY, NY – Ramapo College defeated the Fairleigh Dickinson University 5-1 in the 38th Annual Alumni Ice Hockey Game. This was the Roadrunners 8th win over the Knights in the 11 game alumni series.

Play was evenly matched in the first period. Ramapo’s Jim “Knobby” Nardello opened the scoring at 9:41 to put Ramapo up 1-0. The remainder of the period saw end to end action with good scoring opportunities. A defensive lapse by FDU in their defensive zone in the last minute of the period proved very costly. With just 13 seconds left in the first period, Kevin “Hags” Haggerty scored on an assist from Pat “Pattyhang” Chang. Just 8 seconds later Haggerty found the back of the FDU net for his second goal of the period. Bob Martin was credited with an assist. The late Ramapo goals all but sealed the Knights fate. Ramapo took a commanding 3-0 lead into the locker room.

FDU dominated play in the second period outshooting the Roadrunners 8-5. With Nardello serving a double minor penalty for interference at 15:15, Haggerty scored a shorthanded goal to complete the hat trick. Chang picked up his second assist of the game. With Nardello still in the box, Don Schwenker went off for tripping. Although FDU had a 5-3 advantage for two minutes, strong goaltending and aggressive defensive play killed the two penalties and Fairleigh’s chances of winning the game.

However, FDU broke Peter Troast’s bid for a shutout at 9:26 of the third period. Peter Davies skated around both Roadrunner defenseman and slipped the puck under a sprawled Troast to put the Knights on the scoreboard. That cut the Ramapo lead to 4-1. However just 16 seconds later, Ramapo’s Chris Romano finished off the scoring and the Knights with an unassisted goal. Ramapo’s goalie, Peter Troast stopped 29 of FDU’s 30 shots on goal. Many spectacular saves shutdown the Knights’ offense. Troast and Haggerty split first star of the game honors.

The two teams will next meet in April, 2017 for the 39th annual alumni game.
