MAHWAH, NJ – At the present time, Ramapo College has not determined what direction they will go. There are contingency plans, but none can be put into place until it is known what direction the state and country are going. Therefore, the future of the 2020-21 hockey season is still unknown.
The prolonged confinement during these unsettling times have heightened the desire for the Roadrunners to get back on the ice. The team will be entering their sixth season with a new coaching staff. Head Coach Bob Toy has decided to step to the side, not down, and take on the role of Assistant Coach. Coach Toy cites an ever-challenging workload in his personal career as the primary reason for his decision. As a result, last season’s Assistant Coach, Mike Winters, will be taking on the responsibilities of the Head Coach moving forward.
Coach Winters graduated from Ramapo College of New Jersey in 2007 with a degree in History, a minor in Psychology, and a certification in teaching. He earned a Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in Technology from Saint Mary’s University in 2015 and later earned an additional 30 credits in the field of Education. He has been an elementary school teacher in Bergen County since 2007 and resides in Passaic County with his family.
Coach Winters has coached youth hockey since 2004 for the New Jersey Bandits out of the Ice Vault Arena in Wayne, New Jersey. He has coached Mites through Midgets. In 2018 he was put in charge of the Mite program for a second tenure to oversee its continued growth and development. Coach Winters is also part of the Ice Vault’s hockey department. He was a member of the Ramsey High School varsity coaching staff (Under Coach Toy) from 2007-2015.
In addition, Coach Winters has added three more coaches to the staff. They bring an array of talents, ideas, and experiences to the ice hockey club with the common goal to build team success:
- Steve Lovell – Assistant Coach
- Matt Pitek – Goaltending Coach
- Brian DeCarlo – Strength & Conditioning Coach
The support staff consists of Art Chill, Director of Hockey Operations, Russ Tricoli, General Manager, Jessica Levine, Assistant GM and director of social media, Arjun Bastola, Webmaster, and Scott Lingle, Team Manager.
When asked about the upcoming season, Coach Winters said, “I was eager to start the 2020-21 season this spring with a team meeting to introduce the coaching staff, recap the 2019-20 season, and lay the foundation for the future. Clearly, those plans have been derailed by the current global situation. It is impossible to speculate when exactly life will return to normal, but we do know it will eventually occur. This reality has put everything on hold for the team. This does not mean work is not being done behind the scenes and behind closed doors. And when life does return to normal, you can rest assured we will be well prepared to begin the 2020-21 season.”
As a member of the national Collegiate Hockey Federation (CHF) association, Ramapo’s schedule remains largely unchanged from the previous year. The team will participate regionally in the elite Empire Collegiate Hockey Conference ECHC) and the remaining schedule will be rounded out against independent teams.
